MUSICAL ATTRIBUTES

This “Sung Poetry” goes back as early as the 14th century. The most common instrumentals of this music are vocals along with an antique lute called an oud, (ud). Performers will transcribe the lyrics of the poetry for which they sang about. These tunes are normally set to seven and four beat tempos.

As you clearly can hear from this example of this Homayni form of Sanaa style music, there is only an oud playing to changing tempo of easy – listening music. The warm melody and timbre of the instrument can keep the listeners mind at ease while they sit and chat with their neighbor. You can notice the microtonal notes played, (as mentioned from the OUD Page). This form of playing also keeps the audience interested with the changing tempos even though the dynamics remain roughly the same.
